Glen Roy Abattoir

Glen Roy Abattoir was facing frequent Eskom power outages and rising, unpredictable diesel generator costs. Their operations rely on pumps, motors, and refrigeration systems, which made the power instability a serious risk to productivity and profitability. They needed a reliable, site-specific energy solution to stabilise costs and ensure operational continuity.

We designed and installed a 302kWp DC ground-mounted solar array, paired with 2 x 150kW ATESS industrial hybrid inverters and 400kWh Freedom Won HV batteries. A new temperature-controlled electrical house was built to protect critical equipment and ensure warranty conditions are maintained.

Key design features included:

  • Hybrid energy management – charging batteries while covering site load to maximise efficiency during outages.

  • Power factor correction system – managing induction loads to prevent wasted energy and breaker trips.

  • Generator integration – configured as a true backup, only supplying site loads as a last resort (not used for battery charging).

  • Smart programming – load shedding strategies to conserve battery energy and an energy arbitrage program to charge/discharge batteries at off-peak/peak times, reducing kVA demand charges.

  • Real-time monitoring – via Home Assistant Dashboard for active system control.

The hybrid system has given Glen Roy Abattoir a reliable, cost-effective energy supply, reducing reliance on diesel and stabilising operating costs. Unlike a generator, this solution delivers a measurable return on investment, while ensuring seamless operations even under fluctuating loads and Eskom disruptions.
